Fun at the Nevada State Veterans Home

Sunday, August 6th, several members of Paradise Unit 149, along with a few members from Paradise Unit 149, hosted a bingo session at the Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City.  We always have a great time calling out the numbers and handing out prizes.

Prizes include writing kits (paper, envelopes w/stamps, pens), large print books, stuffed animals, puzzle book packages, and homemade items, including shawls, scarves and hats made by Krysta Howard and small quilts supplied by Maria Moss.  This time we also remembered to include "Bingo Bucks", which are coupons bought from the NSVH that the residents can use in the small store to buy snacks, movies, puzzles, games, hats, and personal items.

The residents of the Nevada State Veterans home who are able to come out to play bingo always seem to enjoy themselves.  Although they are always thanking us for being there, we feel just as thankful that we have the opportunity to do something to give back.

The Nevada State Veterans Home is a retirement facility that provides medical care for those that need it.  It is open to Veterans with an other than dishonorable discharge and spouses or Gold Star parents of an eligible veteran.  The veterans must be a resident of Nevada or had been a resident of Nevada when they joined the military.  The facility provides first-rate care to our veterans who need the extra support.  More information can be found at

Most everyone we meet any time we go the Nevada State Veterans Home, whether it be the residents or members of their families, says the staff truly care about the residents.

Continuing to help our community

As you may know, we recently had an awesome yard sale, thanks to a member of American Legion Paradise Post 149.  He arranged for us to be able to sell the "estate" items of someone who recently passed away and also allowed us to sell some of his items from his downsizing to a smaller place.

Along with this, we made a large donation of men's clothes (including suits, ties, and shoes) to Veterans Village in Las Vegas (, a favorite charity to donate to.  We also donated a bag of women's clothes and some shoes and purses.  Many of the leftover items will be picked up by Vietnam Veterans of America, further supporting veteran causes.

We have also been able to contact a family member in another state who was happy that we would like to send her all the photo albums and loose family photos we found at the house.  Some of the photos easily date back to the 1940's, and probably some are older than that.  Otherwise the house may have just been closed up without the family being able to save valuable family photos.

Many thanks to all who donated, who told others about the sale, and, especially, all those who stopped by and may have purchased an item or two.  Without you the sale wouldn't have been so successful. don't have to be a big group to do great things.
