Scholarships

The American Legion Auxiliary supports four different scholarships, as detailed below.

CHILDREN OF WARRIORS NATIONAL PRESIDENTS' SCHOLARSHIP

 

Deadline to submit to Unit is March 1 of calendar year

 

Scholarship Awarded:  One annually per Auxiliary geographic division  $3,500 / $3,000 / $2,500


Criteria:  These scholarships are for undergraduate study only at a four-year accredited college or university, and may be used for tuition, books, fees, room, and board. 


Elibible candidates shall be daughters, stepdaughters, sons, stepsons, grandsons, step-grandsons, granddaughters, step-granddaughters, step-great-granddaughters, great-grandsons, step-great-grandsons of veterans who served in the Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion.  (See Eligibility Tab)

NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

 

Deadline to Submit to Unit is March 1 of each calendar year


Scholarship Awarded:  One annually per Auxiliary geographic division in the amount of $2,000


Criteria: 

- Applicant must be a member of tThe American Legion, Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion

- Dues must have been paid for the two preceding years and for calendar year in which the application is made

- Applicant may be pursuing training in a certified, trade, professional, or technical program, or a two-year or four-year degree program.

SAMSUNG AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP 

 

Deadline for Application:  Typically, applications are submitted to the program staff upon the participants' arrival at American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State.

 

Scholarship Awarded:  Each year, $300,000 is awarded to nearly 100 American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State participants.  These scholarships are for undergraduate study only and may be used for tuition, books, fees, room, and board.


Criteria:

- Applicants must be high School juniors who attend either American Legion Auxiliary Girls State or American Legion Boys State.

- Applicants must be direct descendants (i.e., child, grandchild, great-grandchild, or legally adopted child) of a U.S. wartime veteran who served on active duty during one or more of the periods of war officially designated as eligibiilty dates for membership in The American Letion.

- Applicants who are direct descendants of Korean War veterans will receive special consideration

- Scholarship winners are selected based on academic record, involvement in school and community activities, community service,a nd financial need.


PARADISE UNIT 149 ACTIVELY SUPPORTS GIRLS STATE, TYPICALLY SPONSORING ONE TO THREE ATTENDEES EACH YEAR.  Please contact our Unit if you wish to learn more about this wonderful program. 

Spirit of Youth Scholarship Fund (an umbrella that supports three separate scholarship opportunities for participants in American Legion Auxiliary programs)

 

ALA Girls Nation Program Scholarships:

 

These scholarships are awarded through the Spirit of Youth Fund.  Annually, ALA Girls Nation awards scholarships in the following amounts to assist with the recipients' college education expenses:


   ALA Girls Nation President     $3,000

   ALA Girls Nation Vice President $2,000

   ALA Girls Nation Ourstanding Senator $2,000


Criteria:  Recipients are attendees at the ALA Girls Nation Program in Washington, D.C., and the selection is made via vote by their peers.  Scholarship monies are dispersed directly to the four-year accredited college or university, per the recipients' direction, and may be used for tuition, books, fees, and other appropriate expenses. 

 

Honorary National Junior President Scholarship:

 

Annually, the Honorary National Junior President receives a $2,000 scholarship

 

Criteria: 

 - Recipient is an attendee at the ALA National Junior Meeting held in conjunction with the ALA National Convention.  The Honorary Nat'l Junior President is selected via vote by her peers, and scholarship monies are dispersed directly to the four-year accredited college or university, per the recipients' direction, and may be used for tuition, books, fees, and other appropriate expenses.

 

Spirit of Youth Scholarship for Junior Members:

 

The American Legion Auxiliary annually provides one Junior member in each of the five ALA divisions with a $5,000 scholarship.

 

Criteria: 

The applicant must have held membership in the American Legion Auxiliary for the immediate past three years; must hold a membership card for the current year, and must continue to maintain her membership throughout the four-year scholarship period.  Scholarship monies are dispersed directly to the four-year accredited college or university, per the recipients' direction, and may be used for tuition, books, fees, and other appropriate expenses.
