U.S. Merchant Marines                                    07 DEC 1941 to 31 DEC 1946

Korean War                                                    25 JUN 1950 to 31 JAN 1955

Vietnam War                                                   28 FEB 1961 to  7 MAY 1975

Lebanon/Grenada                                           24 AUG 1982 to 31 JUL 1984

Panama                                                           20 DEC 1989 to 31 JAN 1990

Desert Shield/Storm/War on Terrorism            02 AUG 1990 through date of cessation

of a United States veteran or active duty military servicemember who served/is serving during one of the periods of our nation's major conflicts (the "Eligibility Periods" listed above), and you also meet the criteria (see next column for further clarification).

  • If your application for membership is based on a family member who is living, that person must be a member of The American Legion.


  • If your application for membership is based on a family member who is deceased, you must submit the veteran's DD214 or other written proof of service and honorable discharge with your application in order for eligibiilty to be verified.


  • A woman veteran is eligible to join The American Legion Auxiliary without first being a member of The American Legion, so long as she served during one of the eligibliity periods listed in the column at left.  However, if her family members want to join any of the organizations which comprise The American Legion family (The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary or the Sons of the American Legion), and if their application will be based upon her service, she must first join The American Legion before her family members would be eligible.


  • Eligible also are  female relatives of persons who served in the armed forces of any governments which were allies of the United States; served during one of the listed eligibility periods; and who died in the line of duty during service or, having been honorably discharged, has since died. 


  • The veteran or active duty military member upon whose service your eligibiilty is based, must have been an American Citizen at the time of his or her service to the United States or one of its allies
